Problem (I created), Question and Intro

Post by RadioDog
Hello, all. I'm a green, damp newbie at map editing here, but I dig what Waze is and think it is worth supporting with my time and effort. I also seem to cover some ground in the Northern Lower that hasn't gotten much attention for accuracy. My name is Pete, user name RadioDog because I am a ham and usually on the air while driving. My call is WJ8I. (You can find me on the Northville UHF repeater most early mornings.)

The problem I created is at Junction and Michigan in Detroit. There was a problem there that I thought might be fixed with an oblique angle connector. I ended up disconnecting Junction and re-connecting it, and saved at some point. When I realized it was all wrong, I tried setting it back the way it started, but (I assume) because of a higher level lock on Michigan Avenue I could not set the turns back correctly. Please, would somebody attend to that?

The question is this: When you encounter an illegal turn, (which happens a lot in Detroit!,) do you just mark the problem "solved" or leave it alone or what? Still trying to learn protocol.

Finally, special thanks to Gazoo4U and JB15TM for gently guiding me away from making more work for y'all in my initial feeble efforts.

Hey Pete -

Welcome to the forum. We've discussed MP (map problems) that resulted from a driver making an illegal turn. If it's clear that the turn is not allowed, we don't do anything to the intersection, mark it as "not identified" and close the report. I think the idea is that "solved" implies something was fixed and Waze will keep reporting the problem.

Whenever you've got time, there's tons of useful stuff in the wiki (editing manual) and I also like browsing the forums.

Thanks to all for the replies and friendly encouragement!

I have begun the daunting task of reading through the WIKI - there is far more there than I will ever retain, but it is good to know what is just an easy lookup away.

Just a thought, as somebody with a "brand new" sort of perspective. . . the Quick Start might include a section right up front of the most common blunders of new map editors. Several newbie traps I have fallen into are:

1) Misuse of points vs. areas for locations - and I might add that this confusion came (for me) from how Google Maps 3d editor works. Over there, the goal is to outline and define EVERYTHING in 3d.

2) Failing to properly set turns after road edits

3) Failing to properly set city and road names for road edits - especially (in my case) for parking lot roads

3) Not understanding that some things at your lock level influence things above your lock level, and that the option to UNDO those things beyond your influence goes away with no recourse after saving.

There is a nice intro to practice mode, which in the future I will be using more liberally as I learn what I can/cannot should/should not do.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Onward!

Pete. . .

Welcome aboard, RadioDog!

Looks like SkiDooGuy edited that Junction Ave segment on Tuesday and fixed the junction at Junction and Michigan. He's our state manager so I expect the fix he made will work properly for navigation. Dunno what effect it will have on the Map Problem though.

The fact that you found the Michigan forum and posted goes a LONG way toward the positive feeling I have about you as a quality Waze map editor. I expect others here feel the same way.

We're a friendly, helpful bunch around here so feel free to ask for help any time!

There are LOTS of resources available and we'll be glad to guide you toward resources relevant to questions/tasks you may have.

Thank you for posting and introducing yourself! Waze on!

Welcome to Waze Michigan! It's nice to have another Detroit cruiser. I actively edit the Oakland/Macomb/Wayne area, and I'll be happy to lend a hand with whatever you need.

We're all glad to have more quality help these days!

I'm surprised this isn't linked from either the first page of the editing wiki, or from the "best practices" page - unless its sole purpose is to forward to people who already were caught on suspicion of questionable edits. I found this article when it was linked in WME Chat, and it was rather enlightening:
