Welcome to Canada

Canada follows most of the editing guidelines that the USA does so most practices can be used without issue.

However there are a few differences that need to be understood before entering the Great White North!

  • Freeways have a different method of being set up and entered/exited. Do not change any road types without contacting a local host first.
  • Be aware that French is the second language for all of Canada and many people speak it as their first. If you run into a French issue, please do not use Google Translate. Several of our Canadian editors are fluent, please contact them to deal with the issue. There is a channel in Slack for this: ca-ask-canadian
  • Although there is a locking standard table, Canada has Traffic Locks (Auto Locks) active. These locks take precedence.

Please review the Canada Wiki page before diving into our icy waters!

Thanks for participating and happy editing!

Mission

Our mission are to handle the following (in order of priority):

  1. URs and PURs
  2. Places validation
  3. Road Classification Conversion
  4. General map verification
  • Missing Street Names (assisted by WME Color Highlights)
  • Elevation (assisted by WME Toolbox)
  • Street name abbreviations (assisted by Custom Canadian WME Validator Script)
  • Connectivity (i.e., incorrectly disconnected roads; junctions with false restrictions; assisted by Validator)
  • We have been given several sheets (Ottawa & Montréal) by Waze of various errors that need attention. Please take some time to look these over and correct what you can, or leave notes as to what needs to be done to fix it.

Raid Areas

The MapRaid! is being divided up by teams.

Important!

Please do not alter any of the following road types without first consulting a Local Host: Freeway, Ramp, Major Highway, Minor Highway, Primary Street. You may edit these roads, but do not change the type of the segment.

Anything locked at 5 or 6? Please check with a local editor before making changes.
If you are a rank 5 or 6 editor - consider keeping highlights active for locks 5 and 6.

Close nodes We make extensive use of the "micro-dogleg" technique, where a geometry node is carefully placed, at full zoom, directly next to a junction node, in order to set the angle to create a desired Turn/Stay/Exit prompt. Please watch for these if you move any junction node, and be sure to recreate the same angle at the new location.

Local Guidance

Canada has active "Traffic Locks", these locks are based on usage from users. They are limited to a max rank of 4, but can be any rank below.

Segments that have restricted turns must be locked to Level 5.

When traffic locks are not enough to effectively protect an area, or after a city has undergone a "Road Classification" change the locks may be manually set to the below standards, depending on the decision of the Canadian Champs.

If the traffic lock is higher than the minimum standards listed below, please don't lower the lock.

Canada Road Minimum Locking Rank Standard
Segment Type Default locks
 Freeway  5
Ramp  highest rank of connected segment
Arrow Red-2.pngRestriction arrow yellow mouseover.gif 5
 Major Highway  4
 Minor Highway  3
 Primary Street  2
 Street  1

Functional/Road Classification

Road Classification has only been implemented in a few major cities in Canada. There are limited government created FC in the country of Canada and generally are only available to certain areas.

We will be implementing Road Classification in Ottawa. Please use the provided maps in the Mapping Resources section to bring your area up to standards.

The following will be the conversion standards:

Ottawa Road Classification Conversion Chart
Segment Type RC/FC Type
Urban
RC/FC Type
Rural
 Freeway  City Freeway 400-series Hwy
 Major Highway  Arterials King's Hwy
Minor Highway  Major Collectors Arterials / Regional & County Rd
 Primary Street  Collectors Collectors

Gatineau Road Classification Conversion Chart 1
Segment Type RC/FC Type
 Freeway  Autoroute / Expressway
Major Highway  Route principale / Highway
Minor Highway  Route secondaire / Secondary Highway
Primary Street  Route Collectrice / Other Road

Gatineau Road Classification Conversion Chart 2
Segment Type RC/FC Type
 Freeway  Highway
 Major Highway  Main Road
 Minor Highway  Secondary Road
 Primary Street  Local Road

Ferries

Please do not use the ferry road type, it's not yet functional in Waze. Canada will adopt U.S. guidelines with respect to ferries.

  • Use the FC/RC classification of the road leading to the ferry crossing.
  • If the ferry has a toll, mark it as a toll road.

Streetname Abbreviations

Please visit the Canada Wiki for more information on abbreviations.

Place Editing

PUR should be reviewed for accuracy, once approved all relevant information pertaining to the place should be entered. Please use each company's website to gather all information you can. Once a place is complete please lock to rank 3. If your own editor rank is 1 or 2, let someone else know via Slack, since you can't lock to rank 3.

This practice will prevent app trusted users and most IGN editors from making incorrect changes to places we know are right. App trusted users and IGN editors are rarely rank 3.

Following are general standards for place locking in Canada:

Canada Place Minimum Locking Rank Standard
Place Type Default locks Naming Convention
Airports 5 Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport -ABC
Hospitals 5 "ER - Example Hospital" with Emergency Rooms
"Example Hospital" for non ERs
Major Tourist Attractions/Landmarks 5
Police/Fire Stations 4 "Ottawa Police 12 Division"
"Ottawa Fire Station 1"
Gas Stations 3

If you're having Place Update issues please use this form.

Closures

To submit a road closure, please use this form. To see the current list of closures, click here.

Ministry of Ontario Road Closures
City of Ottawa Road Works

Transport Québec Road Closures
Ville de Gatineau Road Works

For more road closure information please contact a champ.

Cameras

Speed Cameras are not allowed in Ontario, feel free to remove them. They are allowed in Québec.

Update Requests (UR's)

For the purpose of the MapRaid we will be using a 5-day response time. Once initial contact is attempted you will be allowed to close the UR after 5 days. Reminder comments can be used within the five days. The clock used to close the UR will be from the initial MapRaid contact. Reminder comments do not reset the closure clock.

A page with canned UR responses and their French translations have been made.

 e.g.

2014-12-05 UR is opened
2014-12-15 Local editor comment
2015-01-25 Initial MapRaid comment
2015-01-28 MapRaid reminder comment
2015-01-30 UR can be closed.

Before closing the UR, please make all attempts to solve the UR before closing it as 'Not Identified'. Even if there is no reporter response, use the report type, description, route and GPS traces, streetview and other resources to diagnose the problem.

Those found closing UR's before 5 days as "Not Identified" will be removed from the Raid.

Mapping Resources

There are several resources for the various areas we will be working in.

The Basics

Recommended Tools for MapRaid

  • UR Comments - a tremendous time and labor saving tool with automation and integration with URO+, to help with working URs. Read the documentation.
  • The WME Reference Sheet[PDF] is a printable double-sided tri-fold quick reference guide to some of the common topics used in WME.
  • Place BrowserIn combination with the Place Name Harmonization list, this is an invaluable tool for working on existing places. Be sure to click the About tab to get an overview of the tool.
  • Ottawa Overlay is a script that places a city layer like overlay to mark out the editing groups.
  • Validator is a script that validates a map area in Waze Map Editor, highlights issues and generates a very detailed report with wiki references and solutions.
Download links:
Note: for Firefox browser you also need Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey installed.
Tapermonkey/Greasmonkey is required to use this script
  • WME Chat Addon is a script that improves the WME chat GUI. For a list of all the features check the thread here.

MapRaid edit lists

Spreadsheets and forms are being used to streamline management of various group efforts and track important edits. Below you can find links to use these these forms, sheets, and see the lists.

Boots on the ground

We need local boots on the ground to check things. Please add requests for locals to go and scout things in person, as in on the road. Some examples when this would be used include to check and see if:

  • The street view is accurate,
  • A road is really closed,
  • A turn really allowed/prohibited, etc.

To make a new request, or respond to an existing request, please use this form.

MapRaid Promotions

Some editors really let their bright side out, and let their community skills shine. This is even more evident in a concerted group effort with high-density editing like a MapRaid!. Editors of all ranks working closely with each other and the Champs, really lets us everyone get to know each other, and allows certain editors to be recognized for their skills and effort.

When the Champs see someone consistently editing well, interacting well with the community, and knowledgeable of the various details from the Wiki, they can issue promotions. This can be anything from the size of a managed area, to a rank increase, or even a new role.

Watch here for results of promotions during and after the raid.
