How to draw and label landmarks (United Kingdom)
This forms part of UK Editing Best Practice. Editors are encouraged to follow these guidelines.
Only actual "Landmarks" should be mapped, i.e. those which help the driver to find their bearings.
Generally, landmarks should be drawn as simply as possible. Most structures can be represented by a basic rectangle. Do not attempt to accurately match the shape of a building or parking lot, as much of the detail will be lost on the client.
This class of landmarks is used to either label major junctions or suppress traffic reports where Wazers may be stopped/parked/waiting:
Major junctions, particularly on motorways, should be labelled with a landmark.
Under no circumstances should the road name or city name fields of a segment be used for naming of a junction.
The landmark should be kept tight to the road system to ensure a tidy transfer to the client. The "snap-to" feature, when adding landmarks via Waze Map Editor, makes this process easier!

Large, freehand shapes should be avoided...
To aid navigation instructions, roundabout segments should typically remain unnamed. If the roundabout does have a proper, signposted name, then this can be labelled using a landmark of "Junction/Intersection" type that fills the centre of the roundabout. This only applies to big roundabouts that are larger than 30 metres.
The landmark should be kept tight to the roundabout to ensure a tidy transfer to the client. The "snap-to" feature, when adding landmarks via Waze Map Editor, makes this process easier!

Use the "Parking lot" landmark type. Include the main route through the car park using a Parking lot road type. Do NOT draw every single row within the car park.
Parking lot roads should not be named, as it looks better to have a label on the landmark instead, nor should they be assigned as a "Toll Road" as this is reserved for avoidance of toll fees to drive along a toll road in the client (e.g. the M6 Toll).
Public car parks, i.e. operated by the local council or NCP, should be labelled with [P]. Customer car parks for business should not be labelled this way, but may be drawn in. Names of the car parks do not need to be added, except for maybe some large, out-of-town ones.
Park and Ride can be labelled with [P+R] (same for bus, railway and metro).
Lay-bys should not be marked with a landmark, but should instead be mapped in accordance with the How to classify and name roads Wiki Page.

Correct mapping of petrol stations is vital for new Gas Price feature in Waze v3.2 for iOS and Android, which helps Wazers find the cheapest petrol station near them or on their route.
Petrol Stations should be mapped according to the following guidelines:
- A Landmark of "Gas Station" type should be placed over the entire forecourt, so it's visible on the map and prevents any Wazers from creating a false traffic report.
- Routes in and out should be mapped with roads of "Parking Lot Road" type, they should not be named (city name is optional) and they should have appropriate directions and turn restrictions.
- The landmark should be named appropriately (not just Petrol Station or Shell etc).
- The address should be added if known.
- The brand should be selected correctly. If the brand is not listed raise a support request.
- The phone number should be added if known.
The example below shows a properly mapped Petrol Station and can be found here:
Service Areas and Motorway Service Areas (MSA) should be mapped according to the following convention which uses a combination of different wiki entries:
- Slip Roads on and off the route should be mapped according to the wiki entry for Ramps (e.g. "M1 (N) Exit to Services" to enter the MSA and "Entry to M1 (N)" to leave the MSA).
- Use the Road type "Streets" for all through-roads (linking the ramps).
- Car Parks should be mapped according to the wiki entry for Parking Areas.
- Petrol Station forecourts should be mapped according to the wiki entry for Petrol Stations.
- Use the Road type "Private Road" for limited access roads (with no public right of way). Ensure that they are set to "Unknown" connectivity, and that turn restrictions are set so that no-one can turn into the road and the segment(s) and connecting segment(s) are locked to enforce the turn restrictions.
- Do not add a City or Street name to any road with the exception of the ramps.
- Add landmarks for the major buildings on site (i.e. Services Buildings etc).
A good example is the Strensham Services North on the M5 between J8 and J7. The currently selected segment in the link is the access road.
Note: To ensure that the turn restrictions are set on the limited access roads, select each junction node in turn and hit Q then W (if desired for other connectivity) to ensure that turns are only allowed on valid directions, then once you lock the segment(s) Waze should enforce the turn restrictions and not route the public down these roads.

These can be used to make the map look pleasing to the eye but serve no purpose for search or navigation.
Woodland and forest areas should be mapped using the landmark type "Forest/Grove"
- Rivers and canals should be mapped using the landmark type "River/Stream". Use the Street to River script for Greasemonkey to simplify river creation.
- Lakes and ponds should be mapped using the landmark type "Sea/Lake/Levee".
- Seas should also be mapped using the landmark type "Sea/Lake/Levee" but special care should be taken:
- Where a Sea borders two countries and it has different names, it should be split (e.g. English Channel/La Manche).
- If the landmark gets too large it will no longer be visible in the Waze Map Editor (though it will be visible in Cartouche) so multiple overlapping landmarks can be used.
Railway lines should be drawn in as Railroad type roads, particularly if there are other streets nearby. They will soon appear in the client, and they potentially keep Wazers on trains from polluting the local speed data.
Tracks should be drawn as simply as possible - they do not need to be accurate out in the country where no one can see them, and it is not necessary to map individual tracks through a station.

Railroad segments should not be connected to the road network at any point, but can connect to other railroad segments. All turns should be enabled (no red arrows please).
Stations should just be labelled simply 'Railway Station' as search results will be available from external search providers.
There is no requirement to map every business in Waze as search results will be available from external search providers for navigation to retail/commercial sites.
Where supermarkets, restaurants, retail parks, shopping centres are of sufficient size (see below) to warrant mapping in Waze it should be the parking areas that are mapped and named appropriately for Wazers to drive to these locations.
When mapping these areas, the guidelines for Car Parks should be followed .
Schools, Parks, Council Buildings, Hospitals, Tourist attractions and Churches etc can optionally be added to the map as a landmark of the appropriate type where they are of sufficient size to appear in the client (see below).
Landmarks types that should NOT be added to the Map
Landmarks smaller than about 1600m² (40m x 40m) won't appear on the client, so there's no point adding them to the map. (A standard build McDonald's with Drive-thru is approximately 1000m²)
It is not necessary to add individual businesses, as they are likely to change over time. Waze search results will be available from external providers and this negates the need to maintain landmarks within the editor.
