Groups
Melbourne and the State of Victoria
Victoria has the highest density of roads of any state in Australia. Unlike Australia's other mainland states where vast areas are very sparsely inhabited, Victoria has population centres spread out over most of the state, with only the far north-west and the Victorian Alps without permanent settlement. Population centres are linked by high quality highways and freeways. The state capital, Melbourne, has the most extensive freeway network in Australia.
Important / Mapraid guidelines
Please read the entire MapRaid wiki, and refer to the Australia wiki page for more information. If you are still uncertain what to do about something you see on the map, please ask your group leader. Thank You for your help with the map.
Australians drive on the left
Most highway exits are to the left; waze can produce an "exit left" or "stay to the right" instructions for highway exits. Turns across oncoming traffic lanes are right turns, and navigation in roundabouts is clockwise.
Road Types and Functional Classification
Declared roads are classified under the Road Management Act as Freeways (includes Tollways), Arterial Roads (Arterial-Highway and Arterial Other) and Non-Arterial State Roads.
In the Mapraid area, use the Victoria State classification of all "Declared" roads. Ignore the blue or brown shields on declared roads. Local roads can be classified as Primary Street if they are important roads.
Use the following chart when determining how to classify a "Declared Road" on the VICROADS map.
Urban Victoria | Tollway | Freeway | Arterial-Highway | Arterial-Other | Any other significant road |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Segment Type | Fwy | Fwy | Major Hwy | Minor Hwy | Primary |
Mapraid UR Rules
We will follow the usual UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 4 days.
Do not close URs if the UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [MESSAGE]. Ask the editor who created the tag.
Do Not Mass-Edit
DO NOT perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once. We want to know who fixed what so we can understand how problems got resolved. If mass edits are needed, schedule them for AFTER the raid.
Micro-Doglegs
We use micro-doglegs to control turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions. Zoom in very close to see the closely-spaced geometry nodes. Preserve them.
Road Locks
Segment Type | Default locks |
---|---|
Freeway | 5 |
Ramp | Highest rank of connected segment |
Major Highway | 3 |
Minor Highway | 3 |
Primary Street | 1 |
Street | 1 |
|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| | 2 |
• • • • Ferry • • • • | 5 |
Toll segements should be locked to level 5.
If you have a situation that you feel needs a L6 lock, please contact a mapraid host for discussion.
Places
All Place editing should be done within the procedures outlined by the Places Wiki page.

Mapraid edit lists
Spreadsheets and forms are being used to streamline management of various group efforts and track important edits. Below you can find links to use these these forms, sheets, and see the lists.
MapRaid Promotions
Some editors really let their bright side out, and let their community skills shine. This is even more evident in a concerted group effort with high-density editing like a MapRaid!. Editors of all ranks working closely with each other and the Champs, really lets us everyone get to know each other, and allows certain editors to be recognized for their skills and effort.
When the Champs see someone consistently editing well, interacting well with the community, and knowledgeable of the various details from the Wiki, they can issue promotions. This can be anything from the size of a managed area, to a rank increase, or even a new role.
