Landmarks by Type (Canada)

Below is the list of Landmark Types provided by WME. This list is to facilitate a discussion in the forums about what Landmarks should and should not be included in the map

Minimum landmark size

When creating a landmark, it is important to understand the client application will not display the landmark unless it is greater than 50 m (160 feet) when measuring the maximum size of the X or Y dimension.

If one dimension is over 50 m (160 feet), there is no requirement for the other dimension. Also the area of the landmark has no impact on whether it will display on the client app.

Transportation

Gas Station

Gas Station landmarks should be mapped to the property line. Please ensure that the Brand field is correctly set, and that the landmark name also contains the brand. The landmark name may include other information, if it is present on the sign (i.e. if it's a 7-Eleven with a Chevron station, set the brand to "Chevron" and the name to "7-Eleven Chevron")

Airport

Due to some concerns about how a user gets routed to an airport landmark that has been searched for, there are separate guidelines for how to delineate an airport's landmark, depending on its size and proximity to other potential streets that the routing engine could use to direct someone there.

Large Airports

For airports with close proximity to many roads, particularly, when the terminal is near the middle of the airport lands, two landmarks should be created:

1. unnamed landmark encompassing the entire airport, to the fence-line
2. a named landmark for just the airport terminal in the form: "Airport-name Airport (Code)", e.g. "Edmonton International Airport (YEG)". Airport codes are largely available from wikipedia, and should use, in order of preference: IATA, ICAO, TC LID.

Small Airports

For airports with only one possible method of entry, one landmark should be created:

1. a named landmark encompassing the entire airport, to the fence-line named in the form: "Airport-name Airport (Code)", e.g. "Edmonton International Airport (YEG)". Airport codes are largely available from Wikipedia, and should use, in order of preference: IATA, ICAO, TC LID.

Parking Lot

RARE A parking lot landmark should rarely be used. It is only useful to identify a named / purposeful lot, such as Park & Ride lots for public transit users, and university campus lots that have identifying names.

If the parking lot does not have a name, it should be deleted.

Instead, please use parking lot roads, per the best map editing practice information on that subject.

Leisure

Stadium / Sports Facility

Golf courses should be included in this category, mapped to the fence lines.
