Sri Lanka mini MapRaid
The raid start 01 August 2016 and end 31 August 2016

Hola Warrior

Welcome and thank you for your participation in MapRaid for Sri Lanka, improve central and North area of Sri Lanka. For those never participated in mapping in Sri Lanka before, these articles serve as a good introduction on Sri Lanka (Permalink 1 and Permalink 2). Have a read and get a feel of Sri Lanka.

This Raid is third installment of Sri Lanka map improvement project. The first Sri Lanka raid was over on 10 June 2016 with significant map improvement, and the second raid was over on 10 July 2016 also with significant map improvement.

This raid is meant to improve the Sri Lanka map, especially the central and North area of Sri Lanka. Many of the editors participate here, already experience in editing in Sri Lanka, so this is not a new thing anymore. But one thing make a very big difference now, ninety percent of Sri Lanka area now covered with Waze Street View. So please use that as a very important tool for this Raid.

There will be coming in the future, another raid for Sri Lanka to improve another area as well. Please help us in that process also. I will keep you posted

Okay Warrior, please enjoy the raid and have a fun time

Duration

The raid duration is start 01 August 2016 (00ː00 UTC) and end 31 August 2016

Raid Areas

This MapRaid consist of 8 focus groups (group to help you focus working in this Raid).

All Raider have been assigned a group with a target area. Please focus your edits in that area. Editing outside your area is allowed, though, and even encouraged when it allows you to complete a logical set of edits (e.g. renaming a complete road). However, all Raider will be expected to focus on their group first before jump to help others.

Boundary for each group has been defined by the script

Location of each Group

The Permalink for each group is as followː

Group 1
Group 2
Group 3
Group 4
Group 5
Group 6
Group 7
Group 8

Brief description on each groupː

Group 1 will be able to edit up to India Tamil. You will see Adam's Bridge and ferry that connect North Sri Lanka with India Tamil. Group 1 will be the highlight of this 3rd Raid as new roads need to be drawn here. Especially on the big city such as Jaffna, and also islandsː Mannar, Delft, Velanai, Kayts, etc

Group 2 will dealing with A14, A30, A9, and A34, also you will find Giant's Tanks Sanctuary there.

Group 3 and Group 5 will deal with west side of the country.

Group 4, Group 6 and Group 8 will deal with East side of the country.

The majority of wazer in Sri Lanka will be taking care by Group 7 because group 7 handle Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, and surrounding and of course also Kandy. Take note for Kandy, the name use for Kandy is KANDY FOUR GRAVETS & GANGAWATA KORALE (k.f.g & G korale for short). Please use that for city name. Waze will use point place at the Kandy center for city name Kandy it self, somewhere around Clocktower Roundabout in front of Bank of Ceylon.

Unlike the 2nd Raid, the raiders assigned to this group, please pay attention to Road division (is the road split or not), add as many as places as possible, and for area place, confirmed the end point is correct and if it is need PLR (Parking Lot Road), add as needed. Do not hesitate to map military and government area, just make sure you add private road at the gate.

To view the entire groups, you need to slide at the bottom. There's a slider to slide and see the entire groups. Slider to see the entire group.

Required Reading

Warrior, you will be expected to have read the following wiki pages!!

Even if you have read it in the past, I strongly urge you to re read it over and over.

Useful Wiki articles:

Communication

We are using formal Waze forum for communication. I have added one specific thread for the purpose of this raid. Please use that thread for any means of communication.

Apart from formal Waze forum, we are using Telegram chat room for this map raid to facilitate better communication (instant messaging). Please use this invite link to join the chat room. Use your waze username as your Telegram username.

TARGET

Improve connectivity to all roads

  • All participant need to check the segment connected. Please pay attention to the Turn Restriction, road level, junction nodes, road sign, road mark, etc. USE STREET VIEW extensively to confirm the segment connected. Main Target of course connectivity of all major roads to facilitate routing between region

  • Please use consistent road type and consistent city name for all major road. USE STREET VIEW extensively to confirm

  • If you are using a tool or script, you are fully responsible for its use and its consequences. Please make sure that you understand the features of the script you are using. You will be held accountable for any side effects.

Correct map geometry (positioning, geometry nodes, angle, etc.)

  • In many places the map went very bad. This is due to during creation, the wazer that created the segment use paving or maybe insufficient satellite imagery. Please correct those segments. It may be useful to delete all geometry nodes using WME Toolbox and started all over again to position the map against satellite imagery. Do not forget to USE STREET VIEW extensively in this process.

  • When correcting the positioning please always use zoom bigger than zoom 6. During re positioning, it is suggested to use Zoom 7 or Zoom 8. Do not use zoom 5 during positioning the segment. Using Zoom 5 or smaller will create bad segment draw. It is affect the accuracy of the segment draw in the apps

  • If you are using a tool or script, you are fully responsible for its use and its consequences. Please make sure that you understand the features of the script you are using. You will be held accountable for any side effects.

  • It is an editing standard to use micro-doglegs to force turn instruction. This involves carefully placing the node very close to the intersection to achieve the correct angle, so it will be necessary to zoom in to see them (use zoom 10). If you make a change, be sure to leave them with the same angle

  • Road division: The map is not ready to be KISSed, or simplified. Roads that are divided by a solid middle part, are better drawn as two one-way lanes at this moment to avoid confusion for and editing mistakes by new editors.

  • Please use proper elevation for roads. Do not use excessive and illogical elevation. Ground should be the main elevation. Use Ground elevation forasmuch as possible. The other elevation other than ground is created as needed and it is based on ground. Underpass and overpass only have different elevation when they are upper or lower from the ground elevation.

Draw missing roads

  • In many places the map haven’t draw yet. This is due to during that day, nobody use waze and also sat image is very bad. Please draw those segments. Again, it is suggested to use Zoom 7 or Zoom 8. Do not use zoom 5 during drawing the segment. Using Zoom 5 or smaller will create bad segment draw. It is affect the accuracy of the segment draw in the apps.

Since Sri Lanka now covered by 90 percent of street view. It will be better to draw a segment which has streetview in it. It will be more accurate.

  • If you are using a tool or script, you are fully responsible for its use and its consequences. Please make sure that you understand the features of the script you are using. You will be held accountable for any side effects.

  • Road division: The map is not ready to be KISSed, or simplified. Roads that are divided by a solid middle part, are better drawn as two one-way lanes at this moment to avoid confusion for and editing mistakes by new editors.

Solve UR and MP

Correct road names

  • For Major Roads (Freeway, Major Highway, and Minor Highway), use formal naming from Road Development Authority. Standardize the name as listed by the RDA

  • For Major Roads (Freeway, Ramp, Major Highway, and Minor Highway), do not use city name in the naming.

Fill in the Speed Limit

Please fill in the speed limit. Speed Limit guidance can be found here.

Please use this as a general rule of thumb. Take note that speed limit is apply to private vehicle except motorcycle and three wheeler
Road Type Speed Limit (kph or km/h)

Major Highway (MH) 70 kph
Minor Highway (mH) 70 kph
(I will make an overlay for WME to view the boundaries of Sri Lanka built-up and non built-up areas for speed limit)

Road Type

Sri Lanka has 3 class of National highway (Class "A", "B" & "E" Roads). Refer to Road Development Authority for more information

The purposes of this raid is to improve connectivity to all roads with the emphasis on Major Roads. Major Roads are Freeway, Major Highway, and Minor Highway.

Please refer to this file (bigger resolution can be downloaded from here) if you want to have general idea on how Sri Lanka road network look like

How to differentiate road type in Sri Lanka?

Apart from obvious highway (E, A or B roads) and street road type, there are other road type that need clarification.

Please read through the guide below

The basic questions are:
a. Is there any house / residential along the road route?
b. Is the road drivable using Sedan?
c. How are the surfaces (sand, dirt, gravel, cobblestone, sett / brick, chipseal, asphalt)?

Primary Street or Street road type
Roads that are not Class E, A, or B and drivable by sedan and has a surface minimum gravel MUST use "Primary Street" or "Street" road type depending on the traffic density. Local roads using "Street" road type whether collector roads (moderate to high capacity road) use "Primary Street" road type.

"Street" road type with "Dirt Road / 4x4 Trail" check box checked
Roads that has houses or block of residential along the route and drivable by sedan but has sand, dirt, or gravel surface MUST use "Street" road type with "Dirt Road / 4x4 Trail" check box checked.

"Dirt Road / 4x4 Trail" road type
Roads that do not have a houses or block of residential along the route and drivable by sedan but has sand, dirt, or gravel surface MUST use "Dirt Road / 4x4 Trail" road type

"Street" or "Dirt Road / 4x4 Trail" undrivable by Sedan
Roads that is not drivable by sedan because either too narrow (motorbike path or three wheeler path) or required high clearance (because of a lot of potholes, ruts and ridges) must be set "Street" or "Dirt Road / 4x4 Trail" accordingly with restriction active.

Below are table that contain explanation on each road type

Road Sign

Road signs in Sri Lanka are standardized road signs closely follow those used in the United Kingdom with certain distinctions, and a number of changes have introduced road signs that suit as per local road and system.

Speed Limit, Road Name, Danger and Warning, Road Number and Marking, Expressway start and exit, etc, will be an example how road sign deploy at the street. Use this road sign available inside Waze Street View to guide your editing.

Places

Do Not Lock a place if the following is not true:

Places should be completed as fully as possible any time they are created or updated. At a minimum, editors should:

  • Verify correct spelling of the name
  • Complete the address, to help when choosing among search results in the app, and
  • Ensure the correct location of the Point or Stop Point, to guide drivers to the correct location. Note that this may not always be on the street side of the location.

Phone numbers and opening hours are also particularly helpful to Wazers. Complete them whenever possible, using an online search, if necessary. Photos (add photo currently only available when we are using the apps) should help Wazers recognize the destination when they arrive.

SRI LANKA PLACE LOCK LEVEL STANDARDS

All Places that have complete information (to include, at a minimum, address/city, hours of operation, phone number) are to be locked at Level 3. This is to prevent loss of data due to automatic acceptance of Place Update submissions from Trusted Users, or Place Update Request approvals from other editors without careful examination.

Locking Standard

As the map of Sri Lanka still needs a lot of improvement, we don't want to lock too much that could block starting editors. However, to ensure routing, especially over larger distances, we do use locks for some roads according to the criteria below. Roads that need more protection because of special situations (construction, complicated design, frequent editing errors) may be locked higher. Make sure to thoroughly check the routing in the live map, before you lock the roads.

Freeway / Ramp / Major Highway 4
Minor Highway 3

Speed Limit

The main purpose of this raid is to have a well-connected roads that can be useful for navigation, especially in the Colombo and area surrounding it. The speed limit is not the main goal. However, you are allowed to edit the speed limit.

Please refer to this guideline when you edit the speed limit.

  • Refer to this official document for the speed limit. Read carefully before applying any speed limit.
  • Other than that, follow road sign board for more accurate speed limit. Always use street view extensively. It is very useful built in feature for editing.
  • If multiple speed limit apply, always prioritize speed limit for regular car like sedan. Lorry, truck, bus, motorcycle and three wheeler speed limit is not counted for now.
  • If multiple speed limit apply, always prioritize speed limit for day time speed limit.

(I will make an overlay for WME to view the boundaries of Sri Lanka built-up and non built-up areas for speed limit)

Mass Edit

Mass edits are allowed, as long as they are constructive to the map.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DO MASS EDIT TO:

  • Correct the road name
  • Correct the city name
  • Removing the city name
  • Filling the speed limit

Of course waze will throttle you once you are detected too fast and I need you to be careful also. Waze throttles your edits and points when scripts are used excessively, meaning that you don't earn points for mass editing.

Since mass editing is allowed, it is a courtesy for the next editor and also wazer that use the map that you have been edited that you double and triple check your work after you done mass editing and rectify it before map update show your error.

Highly Recommended Tools

Many tools are essential for good editing, and others make the editing process much easier. Highly recommended are:

WME Validator

  • This is a script that validates a map area in the Waze Map Editor, highlights issues and can generate a very detailed report with global and U.S. wiki references and possible solutions. Keep in mind that guidelines of Sri Lanka (if available on the subject) precede over the guidelines of the U.S.; not all reported errors need to be mistakes in another location.

WME Toolbox

  • This is a script that facilitate the process of editing maps in the WME. It has a toolbar that facilitates the process of removing unnecessary nodes, cut segments, locate "Soft Nodes", or nodes with undefined directions.

URComments

WME Color Highlights

Install Chrome Extension or tampermonkey / greasemonkey script
Check the option for "No Speed Limit" and Uncheck the other highlight options.
Segments with no speed limit or unverified speed limit will be highlighted orange.

WME Speedhelper

Install Speed Limit Helper
Makes it easier to add the correct speed limits.
tampermonkey/greasemonkey required

!!PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EDITS MADE THROUGH THE USE OF SCRIPTS!!

There is a wiki page and a forum with more information about scripts.

Specific tools for this MapRaid

  • There is an overlay for WME to view the boundaries of Sri Lanka via an extra layer (Sri Lanka City Boundary). To use it, you need to have TamperMonkey (Chrome) or Greasemonkey (Firefox) installed.
